bug

i found this guy while watering out back. it was hiding in the grass. i have no idea what it is. any guesses? it's about an inch long and hairier than i've seen most bugs. it looks like a wasp and an ant mated. oh and when i had it in a glass jar i could hear it talking! it was making all kindsa noise. kinda creepy. those giant mandibles (not pictured) didn't make it any less creepy either.

i did a lil research (typed in "big red and black ant like bug" into google) and found out that this is a velvet ant or cow killer ant. it's not really an ant at all, but is actually a wasp.

kicks

this morning the boys and i headed over to their school to drop off a letter with the principle and ask his permission to do their school portraits on school grounds.

the letter states that we do not want corporal punishment used on our children. i can't believe schools are still allowed to do that. no one touches my child but me. i didn't want to send it in w/ the boys on the first day of school either. for 5th grade, i went to a private school that also used spanking as a form of punishment. my parents had check "no" on the yes sir may i have another form but when some lying little girls blamed something on me, i was paddled anyway. not an experience i want my children to have.

but back to the good stuff....

the principle gave me a look like i was crazy for asking his permission to shoot in the school and told me to have fun. i did! we did tons of shots in the halls before leaving and shooting on the railroad tracks closer to home. the boys were great dealing with the heat in jeans (and long sleeves for T).

i couldn't wait to see them and start editing. omg! they came out so amazing! i really think they are some of the best portraits i've ever taken. i have 4 hands down favorites- this collage of two and one of each of the boys. here's T in black and white and Q looking way too grown up!

massive

oh no more green!! sorry but i had to show off two things- my tomatoes and my green thumbs.

i spent over an hour today sorting out my tomato plants. the massive tangled mass of green is only 2 plants, a beef steak and a cherry. that's it. but it's taken over the entire planter. laying on top of the strawberries, rosemary and basil and with the bird netting on it was a complete pain to get into 'em. so off that came.

funny the lengths i'll go to for a fruit i don't even eat, huh?

it's been forever since i've used my fish eye and while this wasn't the best use of it, i think it added a lil something to my 'maters.

the boys call this photo "Godzilla" because the faces they made is exactly what they would look like if they saw Godzilla. goobers.

thank you for all the comments on my socket o' love photo yesterday. :0)

sockets

the first mini day of school started off a lil rocky but went great. the bus ran late because the old bus driver was teaching the new one the route. it ended up being more of an orientation day but anything to get Q familiar with his new surrounding is a good idea. i still can't believe they are both in middle school now.

the reason that they have to get up so early is because they have to shower, do their chores and eat breakfast before they leave. their bus pulls up between 6:30 and 6:45. we've been doing the same routine since they started kindergarten. it works for us.

i got mail from June today. she sent me the top photos of the year from the Smithsonian's annual contest with a lil note suggesting i enter next year. she's such a source of encouragement to me. it's so awesome to have someone who believes so wholeheartedly in me.

which brings us to today's photo. something different for me and even tho i was in the billion degree garage and on the verge of dehydration due to excessive sweating, i had fun setting this one up... and then even more fun playing with it in LightRoom. here is my other favorite from the set.

hope you're having a great week so far! :0)

guardian

i'm one of those mom's that makes her kids get ready for school by getting them in the practice of waking up to their alarms a week before school starts. so this morning, i was up at 5 so that i would be awake and less grumpy (cause trust me, waking me up is like poking a bear with a stick- you don't do it if you wanna live!) to deal with the boys when they woke up. they actually did great. tho today was the underhand granny pitch of the week, getting up at 6. for the rest week it will be their normal wake up time of 5:15 for T and 5:30 for Q.

the hubby forgot his lunch. so once we were all up and ready, we took a ride over to base. the trick was finding his car! the new Chief selectees started their induction today and i didn't know where they would be. after checking in all the usual spots, we found it at the gym. dropped his lunch off in his car, knowing it would make him wonder.

then off for adventure! there's a dead end street across the street from the base that i'd always wanted to explore. it was all overgrown and beautiful in the morning sunshine. this was what we found at the end of it. she and her 3 companions were penned in. two of them looked very pregnant. the first thing T noticed was they were in need of some hoof care. Q thought they were abandoned but there was a trailer and fresh tire marks in the grass. it seems an odd place to keep horses since it used to be part of the Naval Air Station back when it was an NAS.

getting in the car, Q said "wow that's a weird bug!" pointing to his sock. it was a tick. not only did the boys get to learn about ticks, but i learned- next time OFF! :0)

and since i'm such a sucker for sunshine but trying to break out of my green phase, i still took this.

ain't Monday's grand?

and Anne-Marie, sorry for the shoo-ing... but you cracked me up! :0)

fish

i love lazy Sundays!

when we picked up the boys from Tracy's this morning, she again mentioned that she wants me to take Jessica & Justin's wedding photos. it wouldn't be until May 2011 and it's people that i know and love and have shot before. i think i'd be more open to it because of that.

in anycase, i've got to get her some business cards and finish up two ads for the interoffice e-bulletin board. the hubby wants to post two separate ads for me, one for senior photos and one for xmas.

okay i'm warning you now, **SPOILER ALERT**! from here on out, i'm gonna talk about Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince. so if you haven't watched it yet and want to- shooo!

*****************************************************************
god it was dreadful! okay i know that you have to be able to change things up to allow for run time but there was far too many IMPORTANT things left out! for cryin out loud, when Dumbledore died in the book i SOBBED but in the movie i didn't even sniffle. i think they focused far too much on the teen romance/love potion aspect of the book and left too much wizarding out. i've loved each and every one of the films. the first two were my favorites style wise because i felt they were the truest to the spirit of the books. i am so disappointed.

pancakes!

i made a big breakfast this morning and i think everyone ate too much. yay me! i woke up to sunshine for the second straight morning but i should have known it wouldn't last. as soon as the hubby had driven away to take the boys on base for haircuts, the sky let loose. so my tomato pruning will have to wait... again.

headed over to Tracy's for dinner and so the hubby could work on Vernando's new pc.it's been too long since she and i had time to really talk. seems like when we do it's either quick phone calls coordinating kids or an exchange of smart ass text. the one thing i miss most from us both living on base was being able to walk two doors down and give her a hard time.

thanks for dinner Tracy! the lasagna was delish!

the hubby and i came home alone as all the boys decided a sleepover was in order. kids....

i haven't been commenting much (again) and i am sorry. i do need to make time for it.

warmth

what a great day! the sun was actually shining ALL day long!! and tho it was sticky out, it was tolerable. i love the feel of the sun on my skin. absolutely love it!!

this is the scene i love waking up to every morning. usually i'm the only one awake (in the summer) or home (in the winter) when it happens. it's my quiet time. (thankfully this shot doesn't reveal how dirty that window is! i've gotta get it cleaned before Mama comes!!)

i found this iphone app called Typing Genius. it does all kindsa things like help you improve your typing but the reason i got it because it lets up use emoticons in you SMS! it's gonna keep me entertained forever! the only drawback is it's only supported by iphones or itouch. so using the emoticons in a text to someone w/o an iphone will only show up as random characters. but i don't care! smilies, flowers, animals and fun....

some kinda weed/unwanted bush had taken over the front planters and since they are forecasting more rain for tomorrow, i jumped on it. when i say it had taken over, i mean it. by the time i was done, not only was the sweat rolling off me (and into my eyes- god that hurts!) but i had two big trash cans full of the pest. i can actually see the mulch and lil plants that were there to begin with. my neighbor is supposed to be in charge of the yard work, but i don't think he realized what was going on there. he came home from work right when i was finished and let me know he'll keep an eye on it from now on.

i was hot. like omg, i'm gonna spontaneously combust hot. so out came the hose! sitting on the back porch w/ a giant glass of ice water w/ my head completely drenched. the mutts loved it cause i was feeding them ice from my glass.

we hadn't been in the pool for a week or so because of the weather. i got in my suit and hopped in. you should have seen the boys chomping at the bit to get in, but i made them wait as long as i could to get it cleaned a bit. i still think getting that pool was a stroke of genius on the hubby's part. i'm sure i'll think differently when we have to take it down in a month but for now....

hope you had a great day! :0)

oh and Miss carole, if you look close you can see a laundry basket w/ clean 'n folded laundry.... lol
hoffalady > July 30 '09 day 380

wildflower

rain, thunder, lightening and tornados keep me safe 'n dry inside today.

the boys were too engrossed in enjoying the last of their Lego bonanza before summer comes to a close for me to shoot them. the hubby was just beat. didn't even bother harassing him. my baby needs a vacation.

so it was either rain soaked wildflowers from my planters, raindrops in the pool, a nasty black caterpillar OR clean folded laundry. so exciting, huh?

will you visit me tomorrow sunshine?
hoffalady > July 29 '09 day 379

groceries

nothing exciting today. funny how i say i've got too much green lately and then i go and do this. oh well.
hoffalady > July 28 '09 day 378

thyme

i got my 8 solid hours Monday nite and they were divine! i was draggin a lil today but not nearly as bad as i was yesterday. funny, Monday is usually my favorite day of the week. yes, i know i am demented., i can't help it. but this Monday all i wanted to do was crawl into bed and pull the covers back over my head and sleep for a week. :0)

it rained most of the morning and when i finally got myself together (thank you coffee- i love you!), i got a lil done. it's getting down to crunch time. i've got a lil over 2 weeks until my trip to Boston and a week and a half until school starts. my Mama is coming up from Baton Rouge to stay w/ the hubby and the boys while i'm away. i've gotta make sure the house is completely clean before i leave and get a stuffed fridge and pantry. plus leave her a basic schedule for the boys and a list of what i will need her to do while i'm away- keep those evil buggers off my tomatoes!!

i know i'll do what i usually do when the hubby is returning home from a deployment- wait until the last minute. LMAO

i wanna get to the zoo sometime this week. there has been far too many green things in my dailies. i need more peoples.....
hoffalady > July 27 '09 day 378

exhausted

two nites of interrupted sleep leave me a zombie. i accomplished nothing today and frankly that's more than i thought i'd manage.

sleep......
hoffalady > July 26 '09 day 377

fisherman

my boys are Lego masters. they could build, create and play for days on end with those lil blocks. they make up games and back stories for each character. they are really creative kids.

this is King Fisher, tho he's wearing Jock's shirt. (don't ask me. i don't make the rules!!) he's got a magic fishing rod. he tosses out his line, says the name of the fish he wants and catches it instantly.

Saturday nite we had some wicked thunder and lightening, not much rain tho. Brady came into our bedroom as soon as it started. so when his whimpering and whining wasn't keeping me up, the light flooding into our bedroom was. i just wanna sleep for a day or two.....
hoffalady > July 25 '09 day 376

caterpillar

well the boys had a birthday party & sleepover w/ Vernando. the hubby and i have almost 24hrs without them. so we did what any self respecting adult would do- watched horror movies!! :0)

the one lil black rain cloud on my day was finding this guy and 2 of his friends on my massive tomato bushes. i found a couple small black one and one slightly fuzzy brown one also. i'm sorry to say that they were all slaughtered. i really do love all critters, even the ugly ones, but don't mess with my tomatoes! that is where i draw the line!!

i chose to limit my focus on the end of this lil buggers body because... well, he's got a face only a mother could love, hasn't he? and before he was a temperamental lil thing too. i'm sure that knowing he would meet his end shortly played into why he didn't want so pose nicely for the big mean human.

go ahead.... call PETA. i'll be waiting. :0)

oh and one more thing, i would like to publically announce that i absolutely adore Miss Carole (irishmurr)!! i know most of you know her and think she's great as well but i have to say every single day, she's there to encourage me, to make me smile and basically make my world a better place.
hoffalady > July 24 '09 day 375

hobos

my boys are a mess. we went to see our new nurse practitioner today. the boys changed doctors when we moved because the drive went from 30 minutes to 45- one way! not the best thing when you're sick. we got a referral from a friend about a little clinic in our little town. i changed as well since there is never any open appointments on base. over a year and a half and they are still short staffed?? sad.

anyway, we show up for the boys physicals and right away they are making the nurse taking their vitals laugh. T getting excited because he weighs a whole 91lbs and Q grumping "oh man!" when she says he's all of 4ft 7 inches.

but the biggest laughs where saved for Miss Deanna, our nurse practitioner. first it was rubber glove chickens a Hoffman ER favorite. then it was T giving her crazy eyes when she was giving him his exam, making me and Q giggle all the while T shushing us and reminding us that Miss Deanna was "trying to listen!"

next up was Q and he didn't disappoint. when asked to inhale and exhale, he produced the loudest most dramatic sigh you've ever heard.i was crying from laughing so hard. T didn't make things any better when he had his rubber glove chicken, aptly names Mr. Chicken, attack his face sending all four of us into fits of laughter.

the boys agreed to let me shoot them on the way home, but the blazing sun and ruthless horse/deer flies didn't leave many smiles. i did get a lovely shot of some echinacea tho.

woohoo!! hope you had a great day!! :0)

bug

i found this guy while watering out back. it was hiding in the grass. i have no idea what it is. any guesses? it's about an inch long and hairier than i've seen most bugs. it looks like a wasp and an ant mated. oh and when i had it in a glass jar i could hear it talking! it was making all kindsa noise. kinda creepy. those giant mandibles (not pictured) didn't make it any less creepy either.

i had my annual physical this morning. my doctor found a lump in my right breast. she is 100% certain that it's a (benign) fibroid cyst but she's going to schedule an ultra sound to get a better look at it. i was fine leaving the office. fine having a quick breakfast. fine telling the hubby on the phone. but when i was driving to the pharmacy on base, i had a brief moment of "omg what if i have only 1 boob" panic.

i'm over it now but i'll still call her on Monday and see if she's got me scheduled when i come home from Boston.

if nothing else, this might finally get me to do self exams....... maybe......

hooray for Friday!
